The honest rule of thumb

Unjam it, repair it, or replace it?

Disposals are one of the few things where the honest answer is often the cheap one. Here is how we call it.
UNJAM
It hums. Something is wedged in the grinding plate. We clear it, reset it and check the splash guard and the drain, and you keep the unit.
REPAIR
The leak is at the sink flange, the mounting or the dishwasher connection rather than the body of the unit. Reseal, remount, done.
REPLACE
Leaking from the bottom of the housing, seized motor, or a badly corroded unit. Once the body is rusted through there is nothing to repair.

Why disposals fail early here

Hard water and corrosion
Local mineral content and constant moisture under a sink are hard on a steel housing, so units here tend to rust from the bottom before the motor gives out.
What goes down them
Grease, roux, shells and fibrous vegetables are the four things that jam a disposal and coat the drain line. In Acadiana kitchens all four are regulars.

Disposal questions we get every week in Lafayette and Youngsville

My disposal hums but will not turn. Is it dead?
Usually not. A hum means the motor is getting power but the plate is jammed. We clear the jam, reset it and check for damage. That is one of the cheaper visits we make.
What should never go in a disposal?
Grease and roux, egg shells and shrimp shells, coffee grounds, and anything fibrous like celery or corn husks. The first two coat the drain line and the rest wrap the plate.
Should I put lemons or ice in it?
Ice does help knock buildup off the plate and a citrus peel helps the smell, but neither one clears a greased drain line. If the smell keeps coming back the line needs cleaning.
Do you handle the electrical?
We handle the standard plug or hardwired connection that a disposal replacement involves. If the circuit itself is faulty we will tell you that is an electrician’s job rather than guess at it.
