Sewer Smell in Your House? Here’s Where It’s Coming From

Sewer Smell in Your House? Here’s Where It’s Coming From

The short answer: A sewer smell indoors almost always means sewer gas is escaping through a failed water seal: a dried-out P-trap in an unused drain, a failed wax ring under a toilet, or a blocked roof vent. Pour water into rarely used drains first; if the smell survives that, the fix involves a plumber. Persistent, strong sewer gas is a health and safety issue, not just a nuisance.

Your plumbing is designed so you never smell what is in the pipes. Every drain has a water-filled trap (that U-bend under the sink) standing guard between your rooms and the sewer, and a vent system carrying gases up through the roof. When you smell sewage, one of those guards is down. The good news: the location and timing of the smell usually names the culprit.

Find it by room

The guest bathroom nobody uses

The most common cause in the house, and the cheapest fix. Water in a trap evaporates in a few weeks of disuse, faster in a Louisiana summer with the A/C pulling humidity. With the seal gone, the drain is an open pipe to the sewer. Fix: pour a quart of water down every rarely used drain: guest shower, floor drains, laundry sink, that bar sink. Add a spoon of mineral oil on top to slow evaporation. If the smell fades in a day, case closed; make it a monthly habit.

Around a toilet, worse after flushing

The wax ring sealing the toilet to the floor flange has failed, or the toilet rocks enough to break the seal. Sometimes there is a water stain at the base; often smell is the only symptom. A rocking toilet is the tell. Fix: pull and reset with a new ring. It is a quick job for us and a messy Saturday for you; either way, do not ignore it, because the same gap that leaks gas leaks water into the subfloor with every flush.

At a sink that gets daily use

If a busy sink smells, the trap is not dry; it is dirty. Biofilm (soap, grease, hair, bacteria) coats the drain and overflow passage and smells convincingly like sewage. The sniff test: run water; if the smell spikes while draining, it is biofilm. Fix: clean the stopper and overflow, flush with a kettle of hot water and enzyme cleaner. If the smell instead appears randomly with gurgling, read on.

Everywhere, comes and goes, often with gurgling

Smell plus gurgling in multiple rooms points above or below the fixtures: a blocked roof vent (leaves and debris after storm season; birds like the warm updraft) or a partial main-line blockage pushing gas back through traps. Our toilet gurgling guide covers the sound half of this pairing. Fix: vent clearing from the roof, or a camera inspection to find what the main line is hiding. Guessing between these two is exactly what the camera exists to end.

Outside, near the yard or cleanouts

Odor in the yard, soggy patches, or smell near an outdoor cleanout points at the buried lateral line or, on septic homes, the tank and field. Acadiana’s shifting clay and tree roots are the usual authors. Our septic guide covers the field-saturation version; for sewer-connected homes, a cracked lateral is a camera-inspection diagnosis.

Is sewer gas dangerous?

In the concentrations from a dry trap, it is unpleasant rather than acutely hazardous, but it is not nothing: hydrogen sulfide causes headaches and nausea at low levels, and sewer gas carries methane, which is flammable in enclosed accumulations. Treat these as red lines: a smell strong enough to cause symptoms, any rotten-egg smell you suspect could be natural gas instead (leave and call from outside; gas leak checks are part of our licensed gas work), or sewage smell in a slab home with no visible fixture cause, which can indicate a broken line under the slab. When in doubt, ventilate and call.

The 15-minute DIY checklist before you call us

  1. Pour water into every drain you have not used in two weeks. Wait a day.
  2. Check each toilet for rocking; snug the base bolts gently if loose.
  3. Sniff the sink overflow holes; clean if guilty.
  4. Look at the roof vents from the ground: visible nests or debris?
  5. Note the pattern: one room or all, constant or after storms, with or without gurgling. That sentence alone lets us walk in with the right diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my house smell like sewage when it rains?

Storm pressure changes push sewer gas past weak seals, and a saturated septic field or surcharged municipal line sends gas back up the pipes. Rain-only smell with gurgling deserves a main-line look if it repeats every storm.

Why does my bathroom smell like sewage at night?

Usually it does not; the house is just still. No fixtures running means traps are not refreshing, air movement stops, and the smell you did not notice at 6 p.m. is obvious at midnight. The source is the same; find it with the room guide above.

Can bleach fix a sewer smell?

Bleach masks briefly and can help biofilm at the margins, but it cannot refill a dry trap, reseal a wax ring, or unblock a vent. Match the fix to the cause or the smell returns on schedule.

What does it cost to fix?

The honest range is enormous because the causes are: free (water in a dry trap) to a modest service call (wax ring, vent clearing) to real repair work (broken lateral). This is why we diagnose first and quote firm before touching anything.
